Moxibustion uses the warming power of mugwort to dispel cold, support circulation and nourish the body’s Yang. It can be used as part of treatment, or as a gentle wellness method through the seasons.
We combine classical TCM theory with modern devices to deliver steady warmth while keeping the treatment room comfortable and low in smoke.

Overview
About Moxibustion
Moxibustion is one of the oldest and most cherished therapies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), using the warming power of mugwort to restore balance, stimulate circulation, and nourish the body’s vital energy.
At iW TCM, we offer moxibustion not only as a therapeutic treatment, but also as a powerful tool for preventive care and long-term wellness. Whether you’re managing cold-related symptoms, fatigue, or simply looking to support your body through seasonal changes, moxibustion provides a deeply comforting and restorative experience.
Our Method
Our Approach to Moxibustion
We use high-grade moxa segments, cut from thick moxa pillars, specially designed for clean and effective warming. These are placed in a professional-grade smoke-controlled heating device that delivers steady, soothing warmth while continuously extracting smoke — significantly reducing irritation and maintaining a comfortable treatment environment.
Importantly, we use only authentic, premium mugwort. Unlike low-quality or adulterated moxa products, our herbs are free of added chemicals, helping to ensure purity, safety, and consistent therapeutic effect with every session.
Your Experience
What to Expect in a Session
Moxibustion is non-invasive and generally gentle, suitable for many age groups and body types. A typical session may be combined with acupuncture or other TCM modalities, depending on your pattern diagnosis.
Step 1
Understanding your constitution
Your practitioner will review your history, ask about your main concerns, and carry out TCM examination (such as pulse and tongue). We identify patterns like Yang deficiency, cold accumulation, or stagnant Qi before deciding whether moxibustion is suitable.
Step 2
Gentle heat over key points
You will lie comfortably while moxa segments are lit inside a smoke-controlled heating device and positioned over specific acupuncture points or areas (such as the lower back or abdomen). You should feel a pleasant, penetrating warmth — never burning or sharp heat.
Step 3
Safe, responsive adjustment
Throughout the session, we adjust the distance and duration according to your feedback and our assessment. After treatment, we may share simple lifestyle and self-care suggestions to help you maintain warmth and support your Qi between visits.
How long does it take?
Moxibustion is often performed within a 30–60 minute treatment slot, depending on whether it is combined with acupuncture or other therapies, and how many areas require warming.
When It’s Useful
Conditions Commonly Supported with Moxibustion
From a TCM perspective, moxibustion is especially useful in patterns involving cold, Yang deficiency, or impaired circulation of Qi and Blood. Examples include:
Cold hands and feet, or general cold intolerance
Chronic fatigue with a sense of “cold from within”
Digestive weakness, abdominal cold, or loss of appetite
Lower back and knee discomfort worsened by cold or damp weather
Certain menstrual pain patterns associated with cold in the uterus
Post-illness weakness where Yang support is required
Patient Experience
Why people choose moxibustion
Patients often describe moxibustion as deeply relaxing and “warming from the inside”. When used appropriately and consistently, it may help to:
Promote circulation of Qi and Blood
Dispel cold and support Yang
Ease stiffness and heaviness in affected areas
Support digestion and energy levels
Complement other TCM treatments as part of long-term wellness
Strengthen the body’s overall Yang and resilience over time
What patients often appreciate
Warmth that lingers after treatment
Pairs well with acupuncture
Can be part of seasonal care
Care & Safety
Safety & Comfort
Your comfort and safety are always prioritised. Heat intensity and duration are adjusted based on your feedback and our clinical judgement. If at any point the warmth feels too strong, we will stop and reposition immediately.
Some people may experience a lingering feeling of warmth or pleasant relaxation after treatment. We usually recommend keeping the body warm, avoiding cold drinks straight after the session, and following any specific advice given by your practitioner.
When Moxibustion May Not Be Suitable
Moxibustion is not suitable for everyone. We may avoid or modify its use if you:
Have high fever, acute heat signs, or strong Yin deficiency with heat
Have reduced sensation in certain areas (e.g. neuropathy) where heat feedback is unreliable
Are pregnant, especially in certain stages or point locations, unless clearly indicated and carefully assessed
Have specific skin conditions or open wounds at the proposed treatment area
Your practitioner will always perform a TCM assessment first to determine whether moxibustion is appropriate, or if other treatment methods would be better suited.
