Overview
About Cupping Therapy
Cupping is a time-honoured therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that uses gentle suction to stimulate circulation, release tension, and support the body’s natural healing response.
While rooted in classical Chinese medical theory, cupping is now widely used around the world for its ability to ease local discomfort, enhance mobility, and complement other forms of treatment.
At iW TCM, we offer cupping as a standalone therapy or as part of a personalised treatment plan, based on your overall pattern and current symptoms.
Our Method
Our Approach to Cupping
We primarily use two methods of cupping, selected according to your condition, sensitivity, and comfort.
Technique 1
Sliding Cupping
Performed using a thin layer of oil and Bian stone (砭石) cups, this method allows the cups to glide smoothly along the muscles and meridians.
Sliding cupping is often used for:
Dispersing local stagnation and “heaviness”.
Loosening tight fascia and muscle tension.
Warming and gently activating the channels.
Technique 2
Stationary (Retained) Cupping
Cups are placed on selected points and left in position for a few minutes. The level of suction and duration are carefully controlled.
Stationary cupping is commonly used to:
Focus on specific areas of stiffness or discomfort.
Support circulation and the movement of Qi and Blood.
Complement acupuncture when deeper, local work is needed.
When It’s Useful
When Cupping May Help
Cupping is not a cure-all, but it can be a useful part of a wider TCM plan for people who experience:
Muscle tension & posture strain
Local tension or discomfort around the neck, shoulders, upper or lower back, especially from prolonged desk work or overuse.
Body heaviness & poor circulation
A sense of “blockage”, tightness, or heaviness along certain areas of the body that may be linked to Qi and Blood stagnation in TCM theory.
Stress tension & difficulty relaxing
Stress-related tightness or difficulty relaxing physically, where gentle bodywork helps the body “let go” together with other TCM support.
During your consultation, we will assess whether cupping is suitable for you. In some situations (for example pregnancy in certain areas, severe medical conditions, or very delicate skin), other methods may be more appropriate.
Your Experience
What to Expect in a Session
Step 01
Brief Check-in & Assessment
Before cupping, we will ask about your current symptoms, medical history, and overall pattern. We will also check the areas to be treated and discuss any concerns you may have.
Step 02
Cupping Application
Cups are placed or glided over the skin with a controlled level of suction. You may feel a pulling or stretching sensation — this should be tolerable rather than painful, and can be adjusted at any time.
Step 03
Aftercare & Follow-up
We will gently remove the cups and check how you feel. You will receive simple aftercare advice, and where appropriate, suggestions on how cupping fits into your broader TCM plan.
Safe, Clean, and Professional
We follow strict hygiene, sterilisation, and safe cupping techniques—using only single-use or fully sanitised cups—to ensure a clean, professional, and comfortable treatment experience.
Care & Recovery
Cupping Marks & Aftercare
It is common to see circular marks after cupping. In TCM, these are understood as a surface reflection of local stagnation rather than bruises from impact.
The colour and intensity of the marks can vary from light pink to a deeper shade and usually fade within a few days to around one week, depending on your constitution and the strength of suction used.
If you have a bleeding disorder, are on blood-thinning medication, or have any serious medical condition, please inform us in advance so that we can advise whether cupping is suitable.
Post-Treatment Care
Keep the cupped area warm and protected from wind or cold for the rest of the day.
Avoid very hot showers, saunas, or intense exercise immediately after treatment.
Let us know if you experience unexpected discomfort, dizziness, or anything that worries you.
