Acupuncture is one of the most well-known therapies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), used for thousands of years and now recognised around the world. At iW TCM, we offer acupuncture as a gentle yet powerful way to support your body’s natural healing, ease discomfort, and bring your system back into balance.
Whether you’re addressing a specific condition or supporting overall wellbeing, acupuncture can be tailored to your unique pattern of imbalance.
Overview
About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a core TCM therapy that works with the body’s own regulatory systems, rather than overriding them. It can be used on its own or alongside herbal medicine, lifestyle change, and conventional medical care.
Whether you’re seeking relief from chronic pain, recovering from illness, or simply trying to feel more in sync with your body, acupuncture may offer the support you need — naturally and holistically.
How It Works
How Acupuncture Helps the Body Regulate
In TCM, we treat patterns such as “Liver Qi stagnation” or “Spleen Qi deficiency with dampness”, not just “insomnia” or “gastric pain” in isolation. The same Western diagnosis can correspond to different patterns, and each pattern needs a different formula.
Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile needles at specific points along these meridians to:
Regulate the flow of Qi and blood.
Release tension and stagnation in muscles and channels.
Support the function of internal organs and key body systems.
Encourage the body’s own healing and repair mechanisms.
Modern research also suggests that acupuncture can help modulate the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation. Many people feel calm, grounded, and sometimes even fall asleep during treatment.
Evidence & recognition
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognises acupuncture as a valid treatment option for a wide range of conditions, including various types of pain, insomnia, digestive issues, and more.
Acupuncture is highly versatile and can support both physical and emotional health. Some examples include:
Musculoskeletal pain
Neck, shoulder, and back pain; knee or joint discomfort; tension headaches; and lingering aches after injury or overuse.
Stress, sleep, and mental clarity
Difficulty winding down, insomnia, tension-type headaches, and stress-related symptoms that leave you feeling wired but tired.
Hormonal & cycle support
Menstrual cramps, irregular cycles, PMS, postpartum recovery, and support alongside other care for women’s health concerns.
Heat & Inflammation
Symptoms such as sore throat, red or irritated areas, or localised heat and inflammation, viewed through a TCM pattern-based lens.
Digestive balance
Bloating, sluggish digestion, irregular bowel movements, or appetite changes that relate to TCM patterns of disharmony.
Overall wellbeing & immunity
Low energy, feeling easily run down, or wanting to support circulation, immune function, and long-term resilience.
Is It Suitable?
Is Acupuncture Right for You?
Acupuncture is suitable for many people and can be adapted to different ages, constitutions, and comfort levels. This quick self-check may help you see whether it aligns with what you are looking for.
Acupuncture may be especially helpful if you:
Prefer natural or low-medication approaches where appropriate.
You like treatments that work with your body rather than relying only on frequent medication.
Want to complement ongoing medical care with supportive treatment.
You’re already under a doctor’s care and want a complementary therapy that stays aligned with your treatment plan.
Have chronic or recurring symptoms that don’t feel fully resolved.
You experience recurring issues that don’t feel fully resolved, even though tests may look “normal”.
Experience stress, poor sleep, or “sub-health” issues that are hard to label.
You feel off-balance, tense, or easily tired, but find it hard to put your discomfort into words.
Are open to gradual, steady improvement rather than quick fixes alone.
You’re open to a process that focuses on long-term balance rather than only chasing quick fixes.
A personalised decision
We’ll decide this together, not alone.
During your consultation, we’ll review your symptoms, medical history, and comfort level with acupuncture. From there, we’ll discuss whether acupuncture, Chinese medicinals, or a combination would serve you best.
Not sure yet? It’s completely fine to come just to ask questions — there’s no obligation to start treatment on your first visit.
Your Experience
What to Expect During Your Acupuncture Session
A typical session is calm and unhurried, giving your body time to respond and settle.
Step 1
Brief check-in
We start by reviewing your current symptoms and any changes since your last visit. This may include a quick look at your tongue and an update of your pulse.
Step 2
Point selection & positioning
You’ll be asked to lie comfortably on the treatment bed. Based on your pattern diagnosis, we plan which meridians and acupoints to use for that session.
Step 3
Needle placement
Fine, sterile needles are inserted at carefully selected acupoints. The number of needles varies, but most clients receive roughly 6–15 per session. Sensations are usually mild — often a dull ache, heaviness, or gentle spreading feeling.
Step 4
Rest & completion
You then rest quietly with the needles in place, typically for 20–30 minutes. After removal, we’ll share observations, basic self-care tips, and discuss if and when follow-up sessions may be useful.
Safety First
We use only single-use, sterile, disposable needles, and follow strict hygiene protocols to ensure your safety and peace of mind at every step.
